Etudes: Amsterdam (The Con Artist)

John MoranThis is an intimate, moving solo work with sound and choreography, performed by the composer himself. Moran sweeps the audience along on his journey from Bangkok, Thailand, to the theatre where we are this evening. Here Moran creates a show that is funny, strange, and simple – and at the same time, a wonderfully precise and unique work of theatre. Finally, the show turns into a sort of “music lesson” – or as Moran defines it: “The music of how we perceive things, the musicality of memory.”

The American composer and choreographer John Moran is considered a protege of Philip Glass and was discovered in his youth by that noted musician. In 2003 Glass declared, “I am convinced that there is no more important composer working today than John Moran.” His works for theatre include major productions with the participation of Allen Ginsberg, Iggy Pop, Uma Thurman, and others. The “Boston Globe” wrote of him, “Moran is a modern-day Mozart.” As one of the leading figures on the New York theatrical scene, beginning in the 1990s, Moran developed an innovative, simple styleof theatrical performance that extended to appearances throughout the world.

This show was commissioned (2011) by the Amsterdam Fringe Festival and the Bristol (England) MayFest, winning Best Play at the Spoleto (Italy) Fringe Festival and the Amsterdam Fringe. It has since been performed in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, and the UK.
