Artist-in-Residence Project

Kineret Yeshoron
For three months, in Acco’s streets and alleyways, Kineret Yeshoron met with women in their last three months of pregnancy. Would they be willing to expose their “soft spot” to the camera’s eye?
This is “a chronicle of a birth foretold,” as the women count the weeks. The abdomen, as it hosts the flourishing pregnancy, is an intimate interior space that becomes a site of shared heritage; its forward bulge invites attention, comment, and sometimes touch. Yeshoron’s photography documents the inner space of the home, the daily life of these summertime pregnancies, examining the threshold between the individual’s personal domain and what can be claimed by humanity as a whole.
These women—Jewish and Arab, some native-born, others recent immigrants—share an accumulative experience: awaiting a birth. The project seemingly touches upon a basic, human common denominator. Yet in the process of this work, marked gaps appear between the women, revealing diverse strata that reflect variances in culture, tradition, and personal preference.
